Student Publications

The Brown and White

The Brown and White is first and foremost a student publication. While journalism majors tend to occupy most of the leadership positions, any undergraduate student is eligible to apply for the staff, which averages about 100 members each semester.

A faculty adviser provides technical support, teaches basic newswriting skills to non-majors, and helps ensure continuity from semester to semester, but does not play a role in editorial decisions. The newspaper's articles are assigned, written and edited by students. Its editorial policy is set by a board comprised of students, without interference from faculty or administration.

The newspaper was founded in 1894, and has been published twice each week ever since then. A searchable digital archive of the print edition is available through the university's libraries. In the mid-1990s, a web-based version of the newspaper was started. In 2011, it joined The Express-Times of Easton as a community on its site. As with the print edition, the web version is reported and maintained by students while the university is in session.

Two of the student newspaper's writers have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes: Joe Morganstern, '53, film critic with the Wall Street Journal, and Marty Baron, '76, editor (ret.) of the Washington Post.

The Epitome

While many universities have discontinued the production of yearbooks because of lack of funds and interest, Lehigh's Epitome was first published in 1875 and has been going strong ever since. It sells more copies annually than the number of undergraduates in the graduating class. It is regularly an award-winning publication that captures the

history and memories of Lehigh.

In 2011, the university libraries began a project to digitize and make the entire collection of yearbooks searchable.

The 2000 and 2001 editions of the Epitome were selected for a top award from the Printing Industries of America Premier Print Awards Competition. Known as the industry's most prestigious awards program, the award goes to the work that exemplifies the highest standards in the industry.

The 2001 Epitome, under the editorship of Kristin Tedesco '99 and Ali Mack '01, was also selected to be featured on the DaVor Photography Web site gallery.
